Onyx

The name comes from the Greek word Onyx , which means fingernail. According to Roman Mythology, Cupid cut the divine fingernails of Venus with an arrowhead while she was sleeping.

The fates turned the clippings into stone so that no part of the goddess would ever perish. Black isn’t normally the colour one associates with fingernails, but in Greek times, almost all colours of chalcedony from fingernail white to dark brown and black were called onyx.

Later, the Romans narrowed the term to refer to black and dark brown colours only.

Even in Roman times, the black colour of onyx was usually enhanced by man. More than 2000 years ago, Roman historian Pliny described a traditional technique for darkening onyx that is still in use today.

The onyx is soaked in sugar water, then placed in strong acid. After boiling for two hours, the acid eats away the sugar and water, leaving pure black carbon. Today cobalt dye is also used.

Durable and easy to care for, onyx has a hardness of 7 and enviable toughness even when carved in intricate designs. The seal rings worn by ancient Romans are still in fine shape today. Clean with mild dish soap and let dry.

Measure Your Wrist Accurately

Measuring your wrist is the first and most critical step in finding the perfect bracelet size. It’s crucial to measure accurately to ensure your bracelet fits comfortably.

  • To measure your wrist, you'll need a flexible measuring tape or a piece of string and a ruler.

  • Wrap the measuring tape or string around your wrist, just above the wrist bone. If you're using a string, mark the point where it overlaps.

  • Lay the measuring tape or string flat and use the ruler to measure the length in centimetres.

Measure your wrist size

Step 1: Wrap the tape measure just above the wrist bone so that it fits snugly without feeling too tight or too loose.

Step 2: Mark where the tape measure overlaps. This is the exact circumference of your wrist.

Note: You can substitute the measuring tape with a string or ribbon and use a straight ruler to measure the length from the point of overlap to the end.

If it is not done properly, then the size will be inaccurate and I will make a bangle based on the loose size, which always has led to returns being too big.

Just to let you know, most people make the tape loose because they worry that I will make a “tight bangle”. This is not the case.
